This morning we left our Helsinki apartment for the last
time and jumped on the No 7 tram to the ferry terminal, to board the Megastar
for the two-hour voyage to Tallinn, Estonia.
This ship is a star in every respect – two levels of accommodation for
cars and trucks of all sizes; and for passengers: comfortable aircraft-style seating, a supermarket, duty free
store, high-class restaurants and bistros, bars, Burger King (Europe’s
equivalent of Hungry Jacks) and live entertainment. We sat out on the covered afterdeck, watched
the Baltic Sea roll by and had a few games of rummy.
On arrival in Estonia we disembarked, snagged a small bus
that could accommodate all of us and made our way up to the Old Town, left our
luggage at the office of our apartment managers and started exploring. Within minutes we felt right at home; we were
still in the “lower town”, but as we walked along cobbled streets, past medieval
buildings and churches, eventually reaching the large town square, we knew that
we were in line to spend a few enjoyable days exploring the history of this
town and the region. On the way we
stopped at the 13th century St Olaf’s Church, Tallinn’s largest
medieval structure (records show that lightning has struck the spire ten
times). We called in at the Tourist
Information Centre to get the low-down, had coffee/tea/hot chocolate at a café
on the town square and enjoyed a bit of live music on the way out.
We then returned to pick up our keys and our luggage and
made our way to our home for the next four nights, a spacious apartment which
no doubt has its own history. A bit of
shopping at the local supermarket and that was just about the end of another
day. Tallinn promises to be an
interesting, historic town that will be a delight to explore.
