After eight wonderful days in Russia, we left our grand, spacious apartment this morning and headed to Finlyadnsky station to board the high-speed train to Helsinki which, of course, arrived on schedule at precisely 2.57pm. En route we had two border checks, Russian and Finnish, and a delicious cold lunch thrown in. On arrival John had to seek out the office of the letting agent for our apartment and had to wait until precisely 4 o’clock to acquire the keys. Our Helsinki accommodation is a spartan, uninspiring two bedroom apartment for us to share with Sue.
After settling in and purchasing a few essentials from the nearby minimart we went for a stroll down to and along the harbour. We passed some interesting street art, several boats with on-deck saunas and one boat that had a couple of bandoliers of rifle bullets in plain sight. Back to the apartment for a simple meal, then an early night after eight hectic, exhausting but exhilarating days in Russia. We will take on Helsinki with renewed vigour tomorrow.
