We left Riga this morning and
jumped on the bus for the pleasant four-hour journey to Vilnius, capital of
Lithuania. A quick taxi ride brought us to our lovely apartment in a beautiful
old building in the old town – modern, spacious, with some wonderful touches
such as covers over the dining chairs and a candelabra on the ornate dining
table, a huge free-standing bath and separate shower in the enormous bathroom,
very modern appliances and large, comfortable beds. We will be very happy here for the next few
days. After our usual huddle to plot our
course of action we walked to the nearby supermarket for immediate
supplies. Elizabeth asked another
customer where the milk was and this woman, who had very limited English,
adopted us all; telling us which products to buy, shepherding us to the
checkout and offering her discount card as we paid. She then disappeared, presumably to finish
her own shopping. What an introduction
to this town!
We then set off for the old town to
get our bearings, stopping to take a few photos. The only item of real interest, that we will
probably not visit again and thereby requires description, is the mural on the
wall of a restaurant near the Vilnius railway station. Make Everything Great Again is
a street art mural by artists
Dominykas Čečkauskas and Mindaugas Bonanu. It originally depicted
then US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump giving
a French kiss to
the Russian president Vladimir
Putin and was made known to the broad public in May 2016. It was vandalised with white paint a short
time later and the updated version now shows them sharing a joint. Because of their devotion to Vlad (LOL),
Elizabeth and Sue had to pose for a photograph in front of the mural.
We then made our way back to our
apartment for dinner and bed.
